Creating Meaningful Learning Opportunities through Incorporating Local Research into Chemistry Classroom Activities

Incorporating real-life context through connections to research early in the curriculum can create meaningful learning opportunities that encourage students engage deeply with classroom content construct chemistry knowledge. Course-based undergraduate experiences have been successful at integrating context, but are often only incorporated into upper-level courses. To provide an additional pathway foster interaction research, four activities from introductory discussion class were created incorporate authentic connections. Care was taken metacognitive questions designed help make between their preexisting knowledge and course content. Marzano’s taxonomy used analyze cognitive complexity of tasks, which increased revised activities, allowing for more construction. Audio written work student groups as they worked collected. Qualitative analysis engagement revealed control over construction is not enough facilitate consciously engaging learning. If instructors wish promote existing framework, instructors, including graduate teaching assistants, need be trained on how properly increase likelihood success.
